This week, the Læra Institute took an active part in the Seventh UK Arctic Science Conference, convening a session on 'Innovation in Arctic education and public outreach' together with the Scottish Association for Marine Science, an academic partner of the University of the Highlands and Islands.
Our session took place on Monday 11th April, and included three presentations:
- 'Messages and media: Arctic science for a wider audience' — advice to scientists on communicating their work to the public, from Irene Quaile-Kersken, a veteran journalist specialising in the Arctic since 2007, formerly as Environment Editor for Deutsche Welle, and now as an independent contributor to Radio Canada International's Eye on the Arctic, The Polar Journal and her own 'Ice-blog'
- 'Launching the Scotland Model Arctic Council' — a report on the first-ever Scotland Model Arctic Council for undergraduate students, from Anthony Speca of Polar Aspect and Finlo Cottier of the Scottish Association for Marine Science
- 'Introducing the Læra Institute for Circumpolar Education' — an introduction to the Læra Institute for the UK academy engaged in Arctic science, and an invitation to get involved with the UArctic and with our educational and pedagogical work, from our Managing Director Anthony Speca
